Conduct a special hiring for the holiday season to have security guard(s).
Employees that have high risk roles and positions retrain them on best safety practices that meet the standards of the company.
Conduct staff training on security protocols and how best to de-escalate any potential threats they may encounter.
If the company chooses to go without a security guard, assign specific staff/supervisors/managers for crowd control and monitor occupancy numbers inside business. Conduct exercises to practice.
Implement strategic audits that focuses on internal controls.
Ensure all staff are aware of emergency protocols and where to go if there are any impeding threats to the business.
All assets are accounted for on a product list.
Ensure all high value assets have security equipment attached and secured.
Communicate with security company about holiday predictions and expectations.
Install physical barriers for crowd control and monitor traffic flow.
Schedule and assign specific staff to have access to security systems and conduct Open and Close procedures for the business.
Hire security guard services for high-risk departments or site locations.
Test all security systems and equipment before the holiday rush.
Establish and constant revision of protocols for high value items.
Give assigned security codes for management level staff for moving high value items.
Review safety plans and ensure there is an Incident Response Team available for all shifts.
Ensure there is a process for disposing of garbage and securing exterior bins.
For Closing procedures ensure security lights are left on and merchandise is removed from windows.
Conduct safety talks prior to each shift before and during the holiday season rush.
Have designated areas where staff can go to check for daily message.
Create code words staff can use to seek security support.
Ensure the contact list for managers are UpToDate and readily available.
Have your local police department phone number in an accessible area and ask them for any plans specific to your business that can be implemented.
Review the security plans made by Mall management or property owner and share your security plan with them.

Security Guards have several myths that have been associated with the profession over the years. It is important that we debunk the myths, so there is a better understanding of the important roles’ security guards play in our lives.
Here are 5 common myths about security guards:
# 1: They must have a big physique and macho
Stereotypically, people associate security guards with a burly physique and a larger built body. However, security guards do not have a set image as there are security guards with many different physical characteristics that make them just as good to do their job well. In fact, the best types of security guards need to be quick with their thinking and their instincts, proactive and able to de-escalate all situations when needed.
Some businesses prefer a specific type of security guard, such as night clubs that fits the typical stereotype. Other businesses such as a corporate setting or those that offer residential services, may not want a security guard that fit the burly stereotype. The business owner may want a different built security guard because of the image they are trying to achieve. In all cases security guards have to be physically fit, able to use their judgment, be alert and vigilant, and provide the highest level of professionalism required to do the job.
# 2: They do nothing or they don’t really do much
In movies and television shows many people associate the image of security guards as lazy and lethargic. Assuming security guards only sit in a booth all day watching TV and reading magazines in an uneventful and dull work environment. However, this is so far from the truth, security guards are the first line of defense before police arrive at a scene and they must investigate by taking notes and recording any incidences that happened. Sound is a natural part of our surroundings, but the difference between sound and noise is in the eye of the beholder, or rather, in the ears of the listener. For instance, heavy metal music can be a harmonious medley to one person and a bothersome cacophony to another person. While we may have different tastes in music or opinions of what sounds are enjoyable or unpleasant, noise is defined as unwanted sound and can be hazardous to a person’s health when exposed to levels that are too loud for too long and often enough.
We interviewed two security guards about their experience in the security industry
The first person we interviewed is RyanJohn Staples, you can check him out on LinkedIn here: Ryan’s Linkedin. He has 4 years of security Guard and loss prevention investigations experience. When asked what led him to become a security guard, RyanJohn said:
“Got asked to start as a doorman with a bar once I turned 19 then within a year became head of security for a couple of years and started with a few companies’s not long after.”
We also asked him what he thought a security guard would be like and he said: “From first starting off at the local bar I expected it to be slow some nights and full of incidents and issues on other nights. All in all, I find as long as you treat people with respect no matter the incident and remain calm you will have great days. I always tell people new to security to absolutely never take anything personally and always be professional as we are the ones to defuse any issues that may occur.”
According to RyanJohn nothing for him changed in terms of expectations and reality while working in the security industry. We also asked RyanJohn if he could change anything what would it be his response was “More in-person training courses would be a bonus. I am always looking to learn new things to better myself, gain more knowledge.”
Another question that was asked is how has covid affected his work.
He said “ Gave me more opportunities and more jobs.”
If there was anything that could change about being a security guard RyanJohn said he would prefer more in-person training as he is always looking to learn and gain more knowledge.
Another guest we interviewed was Damien Rickus, you can check him out on LinkedIn here: Damien’s Linkedin. His background experience is in the Armed forces and he has also been Security Officer. One of the questions we asked Damien is about what led him to become a security guard as we wanted to learn more about what inspired him to become one.
He said “It is a good career path when you become self employed as you can be earning £20 up, the main reason is that I can gain so many qualifications and have access to similar career paths through the same courses.” Another question that was asked was what did he think working as a security guard will be like and he said “I thought that security guards be under pressure from employers and that there would be something happening every day”
“There’s not much happening every day in the sense of this is serious, I learnt that the main thing is to be vigilant to deter crime and help the community but keeping everyone safe due to the fact that security guards are trained in first aid, fire safety and security, this means we are ready to tackle a multitude of problems.”
Damien also answered our question related to how covid affected his work and said “Covid has shut down a lot of venues meaning work has not been available however once everything opened back up there are more jobs for security than the country has guards.”
With his experience as a security officer and working in the armed forces, we wanted to find out if he could change anything about being a security guard what it would be and he said “I would change the pay rate as security and safety are essentials in the world if the pay increased the number of trained guards would increase making the nation a safer place to be.”
